Keith Gray

Sarah Roberts

2024

Harrow Beijing

Book Week

“Read, Dream, Share”

With the spring in full bloom,

the 2024 Harrow Beijing Book Week arrived as scheduled!

Throughout the week,

the faculty and students of Harrow Beijing came together to celebrate literature and reading, experiencing the wonderful worlds within books;

We transformed into various cool characters from literature, crossing the magical gateway between books and movies;

We met renowned British authors and scholars, engaged in close discussions about reading, and listened to their unique life stories;

In the book fair that filled with exquisite books from around the world, our students freely explored to ignite their passion for reading;

Additionally, there were a series of fun book-related competitions where participants could win fantastic prizes.

“Read, Dream, Share”

The theme this year is ‘Read, Dream, Share’, during Book Week we want to promote a love of reading for pleasure, embracing the wider world whilst getting lost in the wonderful world of books and at the same time share that love of books and reading by creating a worthwhile charity providing free books to the children of the Hegezhuang Village, our neighbors.

Books, literacy, and reading stand as pillars of the rich and high-quality educational resources that Harrow Beijing takes pride in. Our three libraries across US, LS, and EY house over 36,000 books, with a continuous influx of new titles—5,000 were added just last year. Notably, while CILIP recommends 13 books per student in a school library, Harrow Beijing's library goes above and beyond by providing 28 books per student, significantly surpassing the recommended standard.

Furthermore, Harrow Beijing offers a myriad of reading-related courses and LSA classes. These initiatives aim to cultivate strong reading habits among students, driven by their interests, and contribute to the continuous enhancement of their language proficiency levels.

Interacting with

Renowned British Writers

We are delighted to see the return of visiting authors from the UK, Keith Gray and Sarah Roberts, to our school this year. They conducted various presentations and workshops for students across all year groups, generously sharing their stories and experiences. The impact of their visit was evident, and every student derived significant benefits from the valuable insights they provided.

Keith Gray

Keith Gray’s first book Creepers was published when he was just 24 and it was shortlisted for the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award. His books have been published in a dozen languages and have either won or been shortlisted for awards all over the world. Keith has also edited 2 ground-breaking anthologies for teenage readers, working with writers such as Patrick Ness, Melvin Burgess, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Malorie Blackman. He has been a judge for the Guardian Book Awards, the Blue Peter Book Awards and the Nestle Children’s Book Prize as well as being a regular reviewer for both the Guardian and Scotsman newspapers.

"This is my second visit to Harrow Beijing, and the students continue to exhibit qualities of kindness, friendliness, sincerity, and enthusiasm. Additionally, their creativity, imagination, and passion for reading have left a profound impression on me. Through reading, we can experience diverse life stories, gain more insights, and that is the charm of reading."

Sarah Roberts

Sarah Roberts completed her first-class degree in Animal Behaviour, specialising in shark sensory systems in 2012. Sarah thrives on adventure and is incredibly passionate about protecting the future of wild places and their inhabitants. With large amounts of plastic spreading into remote ecosystems and food chains and climate change affecting the places she loves most; Sarah is on a mission to help children understand environmental issues. With no time to waste, Sarah is working hard to close this gap visiting schools with her first book, ‘Somebody Swallowed Stanley’ and incorporating real life stories, photos and video footage from her time in the field to make an unforgettable presentation.

"In today’s digital age, children have access to a wide range of content beyond traditional books. In this case, the connectivity is the key and we should capitalize what we have as advantages. For example, if your child watches a film, you can always recommend the book. Reading is all about the story and enjoyment!"

Dress up Day

The highlight of Book Week every year is undoubtedly the dress up Day event, where hundreds of teachers and students dress up as their favorite book characters, bringing the fictional figures to life!

Shakespeare said, Life without books, just as there is no sun. Wisdom without books just as a bird without wings. At Harrow Beijing, reading has always been a way of learning that we value and advocate. We hope to create a variety of activities for children to help them experience the joy of reading and lay the foundation for a lifelong habit of reading. We look forward to Book Week 2025!
