I'M DREAMING OF A SHARK'S CHRISTMAS!

BY SHANNON BARRY

RECEPTION CLASS TEACHER

Preparations for Christmas began early in Reception as we started to practise for our Christmas Performance. All the children have worked very hard to learn the song lyrics and actions.

However, this did not overshadow their excitement when presented with a Christmas tree to decorate. Sharks set about making decorations using all the resources available and added a star to the top. It was drawn, coloured and cut out by one of our own and was the perfect tree-topper.

We are always thinking of ways to inspire mark making independently. On our mark making table Ms Barry challenged Sharks to draw Santa’s house. They not only rose to the challenge but even drew him castles to live in and elves to help him prepare for Christmas.

The most exciting event in Shark’s class was creating Santa’s sleigh from a cardboard box. I was so impressed with how they taped up the sleigh and painted it collaboratively. It has been one of the most used role-play areas over the last week. I am guessing it is going to be full of presents ready to be delivered very soon.

MASTERING

MONEY MATTERS METICULOUSLY

BY ANNELIZE ENGELBRECHT

YEAR 2 CLASS TEACHER

The Year 2s have been incredibly busy learning how to count money in British Pounds and Pence over the past few weeks.

We started off our money unit by learning to identify different notes and coins in British currency. We did this by playing fun matching games while exploring the values of the coins and notes. The children used their new knowledge of the value of money to choose the notes and coins they would need to make up certain amounts and to compare the values of money so that they could identify the larger amounts. We made coin caterpillars, threw dice to make up new values and learnt how to add and subtract money to solve complex two-step problems.

Once the children could confidently count and calculate with money to find change, we opened our own Secret Santa Shops in the classrooms! The children had to find objects that they wanted to sell, decide on a value they wished to sell it for, put price tags on the items and finally, display it in such a way that someone would be interested in buying it. The children had great fun selling to each other and used the skills they had learnt to know which items they could afford with the money they had and the sellers knew how much change they needed to give to the buyers. We are now masters at working with money!

OUR STUDENTS CREATE THEIR FUTURE: A POSITIVE FUTURE IN THEIR HANDS

BY JAMES TRISTRAM

YEAR 6 CLASS TEACHER

Primary students are the building blocks of our society and equipping them with the tools for positive change is crucial for moulding a better future. Here at BSB Sanlitun, empowering young minds through active advocacy sits naturally alongside our rigorous academic curriculum.

This work involves exposing students to various community issues and encouraging critical thinking and compassion. By fostering an environment that encourages collaboration between year groups and problem-solving, we hope to inspire primary students to become change-makers.

Through the promotion of compassion, respect, and inclusivity alongside core curriculum subjects, we work to develop the emotional intelligence and creativity that will help our students Create Their Future.

This term, our students have done just that!

Whether it is advocating for increased biodiversity in major cities on CNN news; promoting water-saving initiatives as part of World Food Day on our social media;  channel; or making our school motto of ‘Be Kind’ real in school assemblies...

Our students have started to Create Their Future, today!

CHINESE UPDATE

BY KATE DU

CHINESE TEACHER

Nursery and Reception students enjoyed a fabulous time learning about and celebrating Christmas. We sang the song ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ in Chinese. We also built a Christmas tree with Legos.

Year 1 Non-Native group learned about fruits. They had lots of fun practising vocabulary and sentences through a variety of activities. We arranged fruits and characters on the tables. The children made Chinese strokes with playdough and with their own bodies.

Year 4 and Year 5 students wrote their own books by using a story framework we learned. They enjoyed sitting on the carpet to share their books and answered the questions from the other students about the book they made on their own.
