Pre-Nursey classes have been exploring the world of dinosaurs. It has been wonderful to see them so inspired to take risks in their learning and ‘have a go’ at the new experiences on offer. 

In the expressive arts and design area children used large dinosaurs to make footprints on paper. To develop their critical thinking skills we provided inset puzzles, while in the sand tray dinosaur skeletons were discovered. 

On the malleable table we added dinosaurs for the children to cover in playdough and we encouraged them to look carefully for the patterns left by the dinosaur’s skin. We used the dinosaur dance to move around the building and were delighted that Mr Brett saw us, ‘stomping, chomping and roaring!’ 

Finally, some small dinosaurs were born from salt dough eggs, these were fascinating for Pre-Nursery and some of our parents were lucky enough to share this experience with their children during our ‘School in Action’ event. 

Last week in Year 1, we began our new pirate story, ‘A New Home for a Pirate’. 

In our English lessons, we focused on making a list of things we would put in our very own treasure chest. We read the story, which the children really loved, then we moved on to thinking about things that are precious to us that we might put into a treasure chest. Once we thought of a few ideas, we then moved on to using adjectives to describe our items. 

For our final lesson, we invited the parents to have a look at how brilliant the Year 1s’ writing abilities are. We all dressed up as pirates and wrote sentences together to explain what was in our treasure chests. To end our lesson, we made beautiful treasure chests, with our parents, using some junk modelling tools, glitter , jewels and much more! I think it is safe to say, all the parents were extremely impressed with how hard our Year 1s have been working in our English lessons. Well done Year 1!

Year 3 have been learning about Ancient Egypt in their Topic lessons. They have spent time researching Ancient Egyptian forms of entertainment including Hounds and Jackals and Senet. 

They had a wonderful opportunity to play Senet in pairs, which might be the world’s oldest boardgame, dating back to around 3100 BC. The children have used this to design their very own boardgames themed around Ancient Egypt. 

Sankt Martin

The children on the German Programme enjoyed learning and reading about Sankt Martin a couple of weeks ago. Saint Martin was a soldier, who was baptised as an adult and became a bishop. The famous legend says that he had once cut his cloak in half to share with a beggar during a snowstorm to save the poor man from the cold. 

Sankt Martin was a friend of the children and helped poor people. The children like to celebrate Sankt Martin Day, which is celebrated on November 11th and famous in Germany. 

In the German lessons we also learned about St. Martin, we spoke about sharing, as we learn from the story about St. Martin. The children enjoyed learning the story about St. Martin, making their own lanterns, sharing a pretzel, and singing special songs for St. Martin’s Day.

Kartoffelsalat

As a part of our annual topic Year 3 German students were learning all about potatoes. We always start with learning all about potato plants, how it grows and what happens with it throughout the year. We spoke about food made with potatoes and about the food pyramid and the children were able to find the place for potatoes in it. 

Everybody knows the very famous German potato salad. The children are always excited when they have a chance to cook or make something in the kitchen by themselves. Of course, we could not miss it out! The students watched a video about Opas Kartoffelsalat and they were sure, our salad will taste better! 

The children learned all about the ingredients and steps and wrote a detailed recipe for the salad. But we could not tell if our recipe was good or not without trying it out. So, we made the potato salad, following our recipe. And what can taste better than a salad which the children made themselves.
