Wearing Orange for Change

"Orange Shirt Day, formally known as National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, is observed on September 30th each year. It commemorates the legacy of Indigenous residential schools in Canada and the ongoing journey of reconciliation.”

On Wednesday, September 27th, all students were encouraged to wear orange shirts to school to honor the thousands of survivors of residential schools. Our school's student council also organized a meaningful activity to mark this important day.

In each homeroom, students gathered to engage in thoughtful discussions about the significance of this day, why it is celebrated, and its importance in acknowledging the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples. Alongside these discussions, our students expressed their thoughts and feelings by designing their own symbolic orange shirt and carefully composing messages that reflected their sentiments.

These heartfelt orange shirts, each bearing a unique message, were collected and proudly displayed on the bulletin board in our school's hallway. This vibrant display serves as a reminder to our entire school community of the values we uphold and the ongoing journey toward reconciliation and inclusivity.

This day helps our school establish an inclusive and respectful atmosphere, where every student feels valued and safe. By recognizing the significance of "Orange Shirt Day," we reinforce our commitment to diversity and acceptance, ultimately fostering a culture of empathy and respect.
